Vitalik Buterin: AI Must Embrace Ethereum’s Decentralization

Vitalik Buterin criticizes AGI race, calls for decentralized AI with Ethereum as economic settlement layer.

  • Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin criticized the vague pursuit of “AGI” and called for a values-driven approach to AI development, emphasizing decentralization and safety.
  • He outlined a practical roadmap for Ethereum’s role in AI, focusing on private API payments, local LLMs, and cryptographic verification tools.
  • Buterin’s vision positions Ethereum as an economic settlement layer for AI-to-AI interactions and agent coordination, contrasting with the acceleration-focused narratives of major AI labs.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin argued Monday on social media that the prevailing “race to AGI” is a flawed framework, calling instead for AI development guided by decentralization, privacy, and human empowerment. He wrote in a post on X that such a vague goal obscures critical questions about direction and values.

However, his proposed alternative centers on integrating cryptographic principles with AI to build safer infrastructure. This includes promoting local LLMs, zero-knowledge payments for private API usage, and client-side verification of AI services.

Consequently, Buterin framed Ethereum as a potential economic layer for managing AI-to-AI commerce and coordination. This vision encompasses API payments, on-chain dispute resolution, and reputation standards for decentralized agents.

Meanwhile, industry builders acknowledged the pragmatic potential of this approach. Joni Pirovich of Crystal aOS told Decrypt that “Ethereum becoming the default settlement layer for AI-to-AI interactions is realistic.”

Furthermore, Midhun Krishna M of TknOps.io noted the importance of programmable payments and on-chain accountability. He added that agent economies will require identity, reputation, and stake-weighted systems.

This perspective directly contrasts with the accelerationist narratives from major AI labs like OpenAI. Buterin has previously promoted crypto-based safety rails, echoing a philosophical split with leaders such as Sam Altman.
