US Government Likely to Form Strategic Bitcoin Reserve by 2024 End

US May Announce Strategic Bitcoin Reserve by End of 2025 Amid Global Crypto Reserve Race

  • Potential U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve announcement expected by the end of 2025, according to Galaxy Digital.
  • The U.S. government has begun early steps, including an executive order and pending legislation.
  • Not all industry leaders expect the announcement soon, with some predicting action in 2026.
  • Concerns grow among Bitcoin advocates that the U.S. may fall behind other countries if it delays accumulating Bitcoin.
  • Other nations like Kyrgyzstan and Indonesia are also moving forward with their own crypto reserve plans.

The United States government is likely to announce the formation of a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR) by the end of this year, according to Alex Thorn, head of firmwide research at Galaxy Digital. Thorn stated that he believes there is a strong chance of an official announcement regarding the government’s intention to hold Bitcoin as a strategic asset.

Recent developments indicate movement on this plan. In March, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to establish both the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and a U.S. Digital Asset Stockpile. Lawmakers have also introduced a bill directing the Treasury to assess the technical and practical aspects of holding such a reserve.

“Market seems to be completely underpricing the likelihood of such an announcement,” Thorn said in an X post on Thursday. A Trump administration crypto adviser also confirmed continued interest in the reserve, as reported by Cointelegraph on July 31.

However, some industry experts are less optimistic about the timeline. Dave Weisburger, former chairman of CoinRoutes, suggested it will more likely happen in 2026. “This administration is too smart to announce ANYTHING until AFTER they accumulate to their initial target,” Weisburger explained in his statement.

Some Bitcoin supporters worry the U.S. could lose its edge if it waits. Samson Mow, founder of Jan3, told Magazine the U.S. should begin accumulating Bitcoin this year to avoid being surpassed by other countries. He stated, “The risk is that the US is front-run by Pakistan.”

Other nations are taking similar steps. On Wednesday, Kyrgyzstan advanced a bill to create a state cryptocurrency reserve. In Indonesia, the group Bitcoin Indonesia recently discussed strategies for a state Bitcoin reserve with government officials, aiming for economic growth.

These moves reflect a broader international race to integrate cryptocurrencies into national financial strategies, as the debate continues over the speed and scale of U.S. action.
