The United States is considering significant new export restrictions targeting China’s access to cutting-edge Ai technology. This measure would cap the number of Nvidia Corp.’s H200 chips a single Chinese company could purchase at 75,000 units. Consequently, such a restriction aims to throttle the scale of AI development achievable with imported U.S. hardware.

The proposed regulation would also encompass similar chips from Advanced Micro Devices Inc.. The cap would include shipments of its MI325 chips, which are touted to have similar capabilities to the H200.

This development signifies a continued escalation in the technology trade rift. The Biden administration previously implemented export controls on earlier generations of these processors.
