Trump Bans Federal Use of Anthropic AI After Pentagon Dispute

Trump bans federal use of Anthropic AI after military ethics dispute, escalating conflict.

  • President Trump has ordered all federal agencies to immediately stop using AI from Anthropic, with a six-month phase-out period.
  • The directive follows a dispute after Anthropic refused Pentagon demands to remove safeguards against using its Claude AI for fully autonomous weapons or mass surveillance.
  • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth designated Anthropic a national security supply chain risk, barring military contractors from doing business with the company.
  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is reportedly working to de-escalate the situation, according to a CNBC report.

President Donald Trump has ordered all U.S. federal agencies to immediately cease using Artificial Intelligence technology from Anthropic, escalating a major clash with the Pentagon. The directive, issued on Friday via a Truth Social post, gives departments six months to phase out the company’s systems. Consequently, this move targets Anthropic for its refusal to allow unrestricted military use of its Claude AI model.

Trump asserted that decisions for the military must rest with the commander-in-chief, not a “radical left, woke company.” He criticized Anthropic for trying to strong-arm the Department of War and putting American lives at risk. Following this, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote on X that he is designating the AI firm a national security supply-chain risk.

“America’s warfighters will never be held hostage by the ideological whims of Big Tech,” Hegseth stated, banning military contractors from commercial activity with Anthropic. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is working to “help de-escalate” the tensions, CNBC reported. However, the nonprofit Center for Democracy and Technology called the President’s action a dangerous precedent that chills frank engagement with the government.
