- Jefferies found Tesla robotaxis were 60% cheaper than UberX in a recent test, but had significantly longer wait times.
- The financial firm reported that Tesla‘s autonomous vehicles struggled with suboptimal routes, increasing trip times, and fumbled pickups and drop-offs.
- Despite the discount, the service underperformed, with most of the tested robotaxi rides still requiring a human safety monitor in the driver’s seat.
- Analysts noted that “AVs currently rely on novelty, premium cars, and lower prices to capture share, all unsustainable tailwinds.”
Financial firm Jefferies conducted a real-world robotaxi test in Austin this month, revealing key challenges for Tesla. The analyst team took 19 Uber rides and 15 Tesla rides within designated autonomous vehicle zones.
Tesla‘s autonomous rides were offered at a substantial 60% discount compared to standard UberX. However, the service was plagued by significantly longer wait times and less efficient routes.
Consequently, the suboptimal navigation led to longer average trip durations, undermining the price advantage. The vehicles also reportedly struggled with the basic functions of passenger pickup and drop-off.
Crucially, the test found that most of Tesla‘s robotaxis still required a safety monitor in the front seat. This discovery prompted swift commentary on investor platform X, where Future Fund Managing Partner Gary Black wrote that safety monitors aren’t scalable.
Jefferies analysts concluded that “a hybrid model that leverages both AVs and humans will ultimately provide the best experience.” The firm’s note highlighted the gap between Tesla‘s current autonomous capabilities and a fully scalable commercial service.
