  • Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) reported Q4 earnings with a strong focus on new financial metrics centered around Bitcoin holdings.
  • The company’s market cap of $85 billion trades at an 84% premium above its $46 billion bitcoin holdings.
  • New KPIs introduced include BTC Yield, BTC Gain, and BTC $ Gain, all derived from the company’s premium valuation.
  • Strategy has forecasted a $10 billion BTC $ Gain for full-year 2025.
  • The company launched STRK, a new dividend-yielding convertible preferred share on Nasdaq.

Strategy, led by founder Michael Saylor, unveiled its fourth-quarter earnings this week, showcasing a complex web of new financial metrics designed to reframe its bitcoin-holding business model. The company, which holds $46 billion worth of bitcoin, now trades at an unprecedented 84% premium above its cryptocurrency assets.

The company’s transformation from a modest enterprise software business worth less than $3 billion to a $85 billion market cap heavyweight highlights the dramatic impact of its August 2020 pivot to bitcoin investing. Currently, Strategy holds $46 billion worth of bitcoin, making it the largest corporate holder of the cryptocurrency.

At the heart of Strategy’s valuation is its multiple-to-net asset value (mNAV), currently at 1.84X. This premium, which reached as high as 3.4X in November 2024, enables the company to engage in sophisticated financial engineering, including the issuance of corporate bonds and various derivative instruments.

Saylor introduced three new key performance indicators during the earnings call:

– BTC Yield: Measures the percentage change in bitcoin holdings relative to diluted shares outstanding
– BTC Gain: Calculated as initial bitcoin holdings multiplied by BTC Yield
– BTC $ Gain: The dollar value of BTC Gain at current market prices

For 2024, Strategy reported a BTC Gain of 140,538 bitcoins, with projections for 2025 suggesting a BTC $ Gain of $10 billion.

The company further complicated its financial structure by introducing STRK, a new dividend-yielding convertible preferred share listed on Nasdaq. This addition has created additional layers of complexity for investors analyzing their effective bitcoin exposure through Strategy’s securities.

As tracked on specialized platforms like MSTR Tracker, investors now must monitor dozens of metrics to evaluate their position in Strategy’s ecosystem of financial instruments, all ultimately deriving value from the company’s significant bitcoin premium.
