- Sony‘s Soneium blockchain is partnering with Plume to offer tokenized Treasury bonds and private credit to users.
- Sony Bank customers will gain access to tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), expanding beyond existing NFT rewards and tokenized real estate.
- Cross-chain movement of assets will be facilitated through Plume’s SkyLink technology, which uses LayerZero protocols.
Sony’s Soneium blockchain has announced a new collaboration with real-world asset tokenization platform Plume, aiming to bring tokenized Treasury bonds and private credit to Soneium users. The partnership, revealed following Soneium’s January launch, represents a significant step in Sony’s strategy to make web3 applications accessible to mainstream audiences.
Sony Bank, a digital-only financial institution that already offers NFT rewards and tokenized real estate assets to customers, provides a ready audience for these new tokenized products. Bank clients would be natural users for the expanded offerings, alongside direct Soneium blockchain participants.
The implementation depends on the launch of the Plume network, which industry sources suggest is coming soon. Plume operates as a permissionless Layer 1 blockchain compatible with Ethereum and specifically designed for tokenization purposes. The platform has secured substantial backing from traditional finance players, including a $20 million funding round in late 2024 with participation from Brevan Howard Digital and Nomura’s Laser Digital. More recently, private credit giant Apollo Global announced an investment in Plume.
Bringing Traditional Finance to Blockchain Users
Ryohei Suzuki, Director of Sony Block Solutions Labs, emphasized the significance of the partnership: "The ability to offer access to real-world yield through tokenized assets is a major step forward in making blockchain services relevant to mainstream financial use cases. This partnership with Plume unlocks a compelling new layer of value for our ecosystem and users."
The collaboration will utilize Plume’s SkyLink solution to address the challenge of moving assets between different blockchains. This technology, built on LayerZero protocols, works by either burning or locking tokens on the Plume network while simultaneously minting or unlocking corresponding tokens on Soneium. While cross-chain bridges have historically been vulnerable to security breaches, the technology has seen substantial improvements over the past year.
Strategic Bridge Between Traditional and Digital Finance
By providing access to conventional investment products like Treasury bonds and private credit through blockchain technology, Sony continues its efforts to connect mainstream audiences with web3 innovations. This approach could potentially make digital assets more appealing to traditional investors while introducing existing users to regulated financial instruments in a tokenized format.
