Sony Celebrates Aibo's 25th Anniversary with Free Soulbound NFT Collection on Soneium Blockchain

  • Sony celebrates Aibo robot dog’s 25th anniversary with free-to-mint soulbound NFT collection on its Soneium blockchain.
  • Over 9.8 million “Entertainment Robot Aibo” NFTs have been minted by approximately 38,000 unique wallet owners, with the mint ending March 24.
  • The NFTs are non-transferable, designed to reflect the companion relationship between Aibo and its owner, similar to the original robot pets first launched in 1999.

Sony has launched a commemorative NFT collection to mark the 25th anniversary of its pioneering Aibo robot dog. The "Entertainment Robot Aibo" collection features soulbound tokens (non-transferable NFTs) on the Soneium blockchain, an Ethereum layer-2 solution co-developed by Sony’s Block Solutions Labs and Startale Group.

Users can mint these commemorative tokens for free on OpenSea’s NFT marketplace, paying only the required gas fee to complete the transaction. As soulbound tokens, these digital collectibles cannot be traded or transferred between wallets, reflecting the personal bond that characterized the relationship between the Aibo robot and its owner.

In their official Discord community, Soneium explained the reasoning behind making the tokens non-transferable: "Aibo was never just a product—it was a companion. These non-transferable assets reflect the unique bond between Aibo and its owner."

The collection has generated significant interest with over 9.8 million NFTs minted thus far. However, OpenSea data reveals only about 38,000 unique wallet owners have participated in the mint, with individual wallets able to claim up to 1,000 NFTs each. The minting period is scheduled to end on March 24.

The original Aibo robot dog first appeared in 1999, priced at $2,500. The innovative consumer product was marketed as an "intelligent and trainable robot companion" with capabilities including barking, walking, tail-wagging, and ball play. Following the initial model, Sony released various upgraded versions with enhanced features and different designs at more accessible price points. The most recent Aibo model was released in 2018.

The company has not disclosed whether holders of the "Entertainment Robot Aibo" NFTs will receive any future benefits or utilities beyond the digital collectible itself.

Soneium, the blockchain platform Hosting the NFT collection, launched its mainnet in January 2023. Developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs, the network has processed more than 50 million transactions since launch and previously hosted a collection of music-related NFTs.
