The goal of the My Tretyakov project is to allow the public to “touch Russian art.”

Moscow’s State Tretyakov Gallery, one of the largest museums in Russia, plans to launch a blockchain-based platform called My Tretyakov to encourage art patronage, according to a November 15 report from TASS, a Russian news agency. Individuals and businesses from anywhere in the world will reportedly be able to donate money to digitize gallery items, which would allow folks around the globe to view the gallery’s collection and be part of Russia’s cultural heritage.

The project will use a blockchain system, developed by the Austrian company RIDDLE&CODE, to permanently link patrons’ names to the exhibits they help to digitize. Further, donors can decide whether they want to be identified or if they prefer to remain anonymous.

Another part of the project involves the formation of “a giant network” of art patrons. The platform will reportedly allow My Tretyakov members to learn the interests of other donors, as users can curate their own “collections” of art (from what they helped contribute to) and display that information on their My Tretyakov profiles. In a way, this provides more of a social context and an element of interactivity to the gallery’s masterpieces.

The amount patrons can donate is still being discussed, and other details about the project will certainly arise as the project nears its launch, but the goal of My Tretyakov was clearly stated by the gallery’s director, Zelfira Tregulova: “to make Russian art an important part of the daily life of people around the world.” The intersection of blockchain and art strikes again, folks.
