- OpenAI will allow verified adults to generate erotic and romantic content on ChatGPT starting in December.
- This update changes OpenAI’s strict filters following years of user petitions and complaints.
- Rivals such as Grok from xAI and Character.AI already offer fewer restrictions on adult content.
- Users have turned to open-source models for uncensored content due to previous ChatGPT limitations.
- OpenAI plans to implement stronger age verification and new customization features to separate adult and teen users.
OpenAI announced it will let verified adult users create erotic and romantic content using ChatGPT starting in December. This policy shift follows strong demand from users, particularly writers and role-players, who have requested fewer restrictions on creative material.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed the update on social media, saying it is part of a new approach to “treat adult users like adults” as the company rolls out expanded age verification systems. According to Altman, “In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our ‘treat adult users like adults’ principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.” The move aims to address years of complaints about strict content filters on ChatGPT, which previously blocked most sexual or mature topics—even in creative fiction or clinical discussions.
User frustration with content limits led to frequent posts on forums and a Change.org petition asking for an “Adult Mode.” The petition gathered over 3,000 signatures in under a week. Many users described scenarios where even non-explicit or metaphorical references to intimacy were rejected by the AI, as reported in a Reddit post on the ChatGPT Jailbreak subreddit.
With this update, OpenAI becomes a late entrant to a market where other companies already support adult content. Grok, a chatbot from Elon Musk’s xAI, features minimal restrictions and offers “waifu companions” with mature interactions. Character.AI has also allowed romantic and flirtatious conversations despite legal concerns around teen safety.
Before this shift, users seeking less filtering have relied on open-source models like Llama and others available through platforms such as Hugging Face. These alternatives work locally and do not enforce company-wide policies, attracting communities focused on creative adult fiction and roleplaying.
Altman said separating teen and adult user experiences through age verification will let OpenAI maintain higher safety standards for young people while increasing creative freedom for adults. The company also plans to roll out customization options to make ChatGPT more conversational. OpenAI did not respond to requests for comment from Decrypt.
