- OpenAI has reportedly shelved plans to launch an adult chatbot feature in ChatGPT.
- The reversal follows internal concerns about the societal impact of sexualized AI, including fears it could foster unhealthy dependency.
- The move to cancel “Citron mode” comes amid a broader shift at OpenAI to focus on a unified platform, following the cancellation of its Sora text-to-video model.
ChatGPT’s controversial “adult mode” has been canceled by developer OpenAI this week, according to reports, marking a stark reversal on plans to allow verified adults access to erotic content. This reported move follows the recent cancellation of the company’s Sora text-to-video generator as OpenAI refocuses on a unified platform.
OpenAI‘s expert council had reportedly warned the feature could foster unhealthy emotional dependency and risk turning the chatbot into a “sexy suicide coach.” Consequently, the company appears to be backing away from a direction outlined by CEO Sam Altman as recently as October.
Altman had previously promised to allow adults access to romantic and erotic content once a robust age-verification system was in place. However, the timeline was already pushed to 2026 as the company refined its age-estimation technology.
Meanwhile, the debate around how people interact with AI continues. Users formed personal connections with the deprecated GPT-4o model last summer, flooding social media with calls for its restoration. Research published in June shows 75% of participants reported turning to AI for emotional advice, according to a separate report.
At the same time, AI developers face growing legal scrutiny over whether conversational systems reinforce delusional beliefs. OpenAI declined comment on the status of the erotic mode and has not officially posted about its fate.
