- Autofill features in Authenticator will become unavailable starting July 2025.
- Saved passwords and addresses will be synced to users’ Microsoft accounts for access via the Edge browser.
- Passkeys are not impacted by these changes but depend on Authenticator remaining enabled as a provider.
- Users can transfer passwords to other managers and set different autofill services on their mobile devices.
Microsoft announced it will end support for passwords in its Authenticator app starting August 1, 2025. The company stated it will also remove autofill features from the app beginning in July 2025. This change is part of efforts to streamline password and autofill management for users of the two-factor authentication (2FA) application.
In a support document for Microsoft Authenticator, the company said, “Starting July 2025, the autofill feature in Authenticator will stop working, and from August 2025, passwords will no longer be accessible in Authenticator.” The option to add or import new passwords was removed from the app in June 2025. However, autofill with existing saved passwords will remain available until July.
The company clarified that saved passwords and addresses from the Authenticator app will now sync directly to users’ Microsoft accounts. Users can then access these passwords through the Edge browser, provided it is set as the default autofill provider. According to Microsoft, “After August 2025, your saved passwords will no longer be accessible in Authenticator and any generated passwords not saved will be deleted.” More information is available on Microsoft’s official support page.
The update does not affect passkeys, which are an alternative method for user authentication. Microsoft stated that users with passkeys for their accounts must keep Authenticator enabled as their passkey provider. Disabling Authenticator will also deactivate passkey functionality.
For users who prefer other password manager services, options such as Apple iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager can be set as the default autofill provider on mobile devices. Microsoft has provided guidance for users on how to export passwords from Authenticator and import them into another service.
