The shoes in question were created by Nike’s subsidiary, RTFKT. At the same time, the company’s founders also gifted LeBron James with his own Clone X NFT avatar.

The RTFKT x Nike Air Force 1 Genesis is one of a total of 1,776 pairs of sneakers of the same type that can be purchased with NFT, which can then be redeemed for physical product.

The international basketball player was seen wearing the Nike sneakers on Tuesday before the Los Angeles Lakers’ win over the Golden State Warriors for the NBA semifinals. The Lakers posted a photo of LeBron James wearing the black and red-colored shoes on Twitter, along with a photo of teammate Anthony Davis.

The photo quickly went viral among RTFKT NFT owners, and then the same company, which was famously acquired by Nike in December 2021, posted it on Twitter focusing on the familiar shoes worn by the basketball player.

Shortly after, RTFKT co-founder Steven “Zaptio” Vasilev shared a photo of himself alongside the subsidiary’s COO Nikhil Gopalani, presenting LeBron James with an honorary Clone X avatar. “We’ve boarded the legend, LeBron James at RTFKT with his 1/1 Clone X,” Vasilev wrote.

Clone X is an Ethereum NFT profile picture (PFP) project launched in 2021 as a collaboration between Nike subsidiary RTFKT and contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami.

It has grown into one of the most well-known and successful PFP projects in the space, generating nearly $835 million worth of transaction volume to date, according to data from CryptoSlam.
