Baidu Cloud rings in the Chinese New Year with a new blockchain engine.
On February 14, Chinese company Baidu Cloud introduced its Baidu Blockchain Engine (BBE), an operating system to help developers create dApps.
BBE has three primary components: artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing. Baidu Cloud says this “ABC” principle determines the superstructure: “The troika of computing, storage, and networking as the underlying architecture affects almost the entire blockchain product landscape.”
Baidu Blockchain developed BBE to serve six functions: a trusted computing environment, scalable storage, trusted cross-chain interaction, high performance and throughput, smart contract support, and contract security audit. The goal is that BBE can be flexible enough to confront multiple technical challenges and provide support in these areas so that developers can create useful applications for a wide variety of industries.
Baidu Cloud hopes that by offering a strong blockchain platform, it can empower companies and developers to build dApps suited to the needs of particular companies. Baidu Cloud gave several potential uses cases for dApps built atop BBE, including transportation of hazardous chemicals and tools for consumer finance.
BBE is the latest development in a series of moves to facilitate the adoption and application of blockchain technology. In January 2018, Baidu launched Baidu Trust, a blockchain-as-a-service (BaaS) platform. In April, the company launched another blockchain platform called Totem, which is a tool to help protect photographers’ work against unauthorized use and also to connect clients to stock photos. And last June, Baidu announced the development of Super Chain to optimize energy efficiency in crypto mining.
