- Internet Identity 2.0 replaces the previous login system for the Internet Computer with a new secure authentication process.
- The update introduces passkeys, removes requirement for users to remember identity numbers, and allows Google account sign-in.
- Users can upgrade easily by visiting id.ai or logging in to a supported app, retaining access to existing applications.
- Upgrading does not result in any loss of login information or data, and maintains compatibility with both new and old systems.
- Apps using the earlier version of Internet Identity will continue to function; certain new apps require the 2.0 version to log in.
DFINITY has launched Internet Identity 2.0, a redesigned authentication tool for the Internet Computer network. The update is available starting today through id.ai, or by logging in to compatible web applications like Caffeine. The new service aims to simplify secure logins and expand login options for users.
Official details from DFINITY highlight several enhancements. Users can now use modern passkey standards that store private keys directly on their devices, making logins more secure and avoiding the need for complex passwords. Internet Identity 2.0 also introduces “Discoverable Passkeys,” eliminating the requirement to remember or manage identity numbers. Additionally, the service allows users to authenticate with their Google Account, providing a familiar login method for billions of people.
According to the rollout guide, the upgrade process does not delete or alter existing login data. “You won’t lose anything. Your login information remains unchanged, and there is no data loss,” the company states. After upgrading, users will see a “primary account” option that mirrors their previous Internet Identity 1.0 account. Users are prompted to create a name for their identity, which helps with recognition but is not unique across the platform.
Internet Identity 2.0’s interface has also been refreshed for easier navigation. Users can generate multiple accounts for a single app without managing several separate identities, offering more flexibility for various roles. Applications built with Internet Identity 1.0 remain functional. However, new applications and updates, like Caffeine, require the 2.0 version for access.
Users who choose not to upgrade cannot use the new login system or apps that require Internet Identity 2.0. More information on integrating or upgrading Internet Identity can be found on the Internet Computer Developer Forum and the Existing Users Upgrade forum thread.
To start the upgrade or create an account, users can visit id.ai.
