India Slashes Russian Oil Imports by 50% After US Talks

  • Indian oil refiners are reducing Russian crude imports by 50% after discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump.
  • India’s purchases of Russian crude fell to about 1.75 million barrels per day between April and September 2025, down from 40% to 36% of total imports year over year.
  • President Trump stated that Prime Minister Modi assured him India would soon stop buying Russian oil.
  • India continues to emphasize energy security and price stability as its primary import policy objectives.
  • President Trump plans meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Indian oil refiners are cutting Russian crude oil imports by half following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a senior White House official. This decision follows recent trade discussions between India and the United States.

Data shows that between April and September 2025, India’s Russian crude imports dropped to around 1.75 million barrels per day. This now accounts for 36% of all Indian oil imports, compared to 40% during the same period last year. India remains the world’s second-largest importer of Russian oil, after China.

Following a White House event, President Trump remarked, “So I was not happy that India was buying oil, and he (Modi) assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia. That’s a big step. Now we’re going to get China to do the same thing.”

India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated their stance that energy import policy focuses on “safeguarding the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario.” The statement noted that policies are aimed at ensuring price stability and a secure, reliable supply. The ministry did not directly address President Trump’s remarks.

India has reportedly increased its energy imports from the United States in recent months, with officials suggesting this move could ease trade tensions between the two countries. The relationship faced strain after the U.S. imposed tariffs of up to 50% on Indian exports, in response to India’s ongoing purchases of discounted Russian oil.

In a related development, President Trump announced plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest for talks aimed at ending the Ukraine conflict. Trump posted on Truth Social that Putin congratulated him for achieving “peace in the Middle East,” and expressed optimism that this would help negotiations to end the Russia–Ukraine war. Preparatory talks are set to begin next week, led by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, according to official statements. The Kremlin confirmed the call between the two leaders.

Additionally, President Trump is scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House to coordinate diplomatic and military cooperation.
