Hongik University Lab Adopts Theta EdgeCloud for AI Research

Hongik University Lab Partners with Theta EdgeCloud to Advance AI and Big Data Research with Decentralized GPU Computing

  • Hongik University‘s High-Performance Data Processing & Analysis Lab has joined as a customer and research partner of Theta EdgeCloud.
  • The lab focuses on scalable computing for Artificial Intelligence, distributed systems, and cloud-native solutions.
  • The partnership gives the lab access to Theta EdgeCloud Hybrid, a decentralized GPU platform for AI training, big data, and IoT research.
  • Prof. Eun-Sung Jung stated that Theta’s platform offers high-performance and cost-effective GPU resources for AI and big data workloads.
  • Theta EdgeCloud is also used by institutions including Stanford University, Seoul National University, KAIST, and NTU Singapore.

The High-Performance Data Processing & Analysis Lab at Hongik University has become a new customer and research collaborator with Theta EdgeCloud. The lab, led by Associate Professor Eun-Sung Jung, will use EdgeCloud’s hybrid computing platform to support its research in artificial intelligence, big data handling, and real-time systems. The lab’s involvement aims to accelerate large-scale data and AI projects at the university.

The lab, known for its work in scalable AI, IoT, and distributed computing, receives backing from organizations such as Korea’s Ministry of Education, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP). It also collaborates with agencies like the Korea Meteorological Institute and the Argonne National Laboratory in the United States.

According to Professor Jung, “Theta’s EdgeCloud Hybrid is a valuable resource for pushing the limits of our data-driven research. With high-performance and highly cost-effective GPU capacity readily available, we can accelerate our work across AI/ML, big data infrastructure, and edge-based IoT analytics. Not all of our AI jobs require centralized high powered GPUs and that’s where EdgeCloud’s NVIDIA 3000s and 4000s GPUs are particularly attractive.” The platform’s decentralized approach allows access to a combination of high-powered GPUs, like the NVIDIA 3000 and 4000 series, as well as top-tier NVIDIA A100 and H100 GPUs that became available in June.

The lab’s research covers a range of areas, including high-performance computing for large AI models, cloud platforms for big data, and data analysis for Internet of Things devices. These efforts involve building efficient systems for AI model training, real-time device analytics, and optimizing data workflows using modern storage technologies.

Institutions like Stanford University, KAIST, NTU Singapore, and the Houston Rockets are also part of Theta EdgeCloud‘s list of users. According to Mitch Liu, CEO and Co-Founder of Theta Labs, “The primary reason Hongik University selected EdgeCloud over other platforms is the availability of high-performance NVIDIA A100s and H100s and highly cost-effective community run NVIDIA 3090s, 4070s/4080s/4090s which became available in the GPU marketplace on June 25.”
