Guernsey seizes $11.4M tied to OneCoin in Cryptoqueen probe.

Guernsey seizes $11.4M linked to OneCoin after Royal Court upholds German forfeiture order; funds held at RBS International and Ignatova remains fugitive

  • Guernsey authorities confiscated $11.4 million linked to the OneCoin fraud after a Royal Court ruling.
  • The seizure enforced an overseas forfeiture order under updated Guernsey proceeds-of-crime rules.
  • The funds were held at RBS International in an account named Aquitaine Group Limited; no new criminal charges were announced.
  • The recovery likely represents only a tiny fraction of total OneCoin losses and highlights challenges in tracing and seizing crypto assets.
  • Ruja Ignatova, the scheme’s public leader, remains a fugitive; law enforcement actions and reporting on asset freezes continue.

Authorities in Guernsey seized $11.4 million on Monday after the Royal Court upheld an overseas forfeiture order sought by German authorities under Guernsey’s proceeds-of-crime regime, according to a report. Officials placed the funds just under $11.4 million and did not specify the exact digital assets involved.

Court papers show the action relied on laws updated in 2024 to govern seized assets, as set out in the relevant ordinance. The money was reportedly held at RBS International in an account under the name Aquitaine Group Limited. Authorities did not say whether more OneCoin-linked assets are under review.

The seizure connects to the long-running collapse of OneCoin, whose public promoter Ruja Ignatova disappeared in 2017 as prosecutors closed in. Law enforcement and courts in multiple countries later pursued associates and traced proceeds through offshore structures. Reporting of global asset-freeze measures has left the wider case unresolved, as detailed in an investigation.

Ignatova remains on the FBI’s most-wanted list. Observers note recovery is difficult when suspects hold private keys or use exchanges and privacy tools. As one expert said, “OneCoin’s fraud predates modern on-chain detection capabilities. Today’s threat detection systems can identify suspicious patterns in real-time, including transactions funded by mixer services.”

A podcast about the case is available as an episode titled “The Missing Cryptoqueen,” which listeners can find on Spotify. No new criminal indictments were reported with this seizure.
