- Figure AI terminates collaboration with OpenAI following claimed breakthrough in robot intelligence development.
- Partnership dissolution comes shortly after $675 million funding round that valued Figure at $2.6 billion.
- Company cites development of proprietary end-to-end AI system as reason for ending OpenAI dependency.
- Figure secured major contracts with BMW Manufacturing and another unnamed U.S. client.
- Company projects deployment of 100,000 robots over next four years through commercial partnerships.
Figure AI, a leading U.S. robotics startup, has terminated its partnership with OpenAI, citing a significant advancement in their proprietary robot intelligence technology. The decision comes mere months after securing a $675 million funding round that valued the company at $2.6 billion.
CEO Brett Adcock announced the split via social media, stating, “Figure made a major breakthrough on fully end-to-end robot AI, built entirely in-house.” The company had previously planned to integrate OpenAI’s language models into its Figure 02 humanoid robot’s communication systems.
The separation reflects broader industry trends, as OpenAI has begun rebuilding its robotics division and filed trademarks for humanoid robots. Industry analysts suggest the split may be influenced by the “DeepSeek effect,” where open-source alternatives are forcing established AI providers to reconsider their pricing strategies.
Figure has made significant commercial progress, securing a partnership with BMW Manufacturing and recently announcing a second major U.S. client. In a LinkedIn post, Adcock projected ambitious deployment targets: “Between both customers, we believe there is a path to 100,000 robots over the next four years.”
The company’s proprietary embodied Artificial Intelligence system combines cloud and edge computing to enable real-time learning and adaptation. This technology allows robots to process natural language commands while integrating vision and motion control capabilities.
While OpenAI maintains investments in other robotics ventures, including Norwegian startup 1X, Figure’s decision to develop in-house solutions marks a significant shift in the robotics AI landscape. Adcock has promised to demonstrate their breakthrough technology within 30 days, suggesting unprecedented capabilities in humanoid robotics.
