Violence is escalating across Mexico following the death of notorious cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, putting the 2026 FIFA World Cup in jeopardy. According to reports, the 59-year-old head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was killed during clashes with authorities on Sunday, sparking retaliatory attacks by his supporters.
His death led to the burning of vehicles and buildings, including in Guadalajara, a scheduled host city. Consequently, credible chatter from insiders claims FIFA is considering relocating Mexican games to the US and Canada.
FIFA host Scott Friedman also claims a contact informed him games will be moved if the situation doesn’t improve soon. Meanwhile, the violence has prompted several countries, including the US, to issue travel warnings for affected regions.
Investigations have long linked Cervantes’s organization to sophisticated cryptocurrency laundering. On-chain analysis from TRM Labs found the CJNG used crypto to convert drug funds into stablecoins.
A 2022 Drug Enforcement Administration operation reportedly discovered the cartel moved up to $40 million via Binance. Moreover, a Mexican broker was sentenced to eight years for running US-based crypto laundering hubs for the CJNG.
The US had offered a reward of $15 million for information leading to his arrest. FIFA has yet to publicly comment on the security situation or potential venue changes for the upcoming tournament.
