Ethereum’s Next Upgrade, Hegota, Takes Shape

Ethereum developers plan Hegota upgrade with censorship resistance, quantum security, and front-running protection.

  • Ethereum developers are planning the Hegota upgrade while finalizing the upcoming “Glamsterdam” update.
  • Fork-choice inclusion lists (FOCIL) are emerging as a consensus headliner feature to prevent transaction censorship.
  • Vitalik Buterin endorsed “frame transactions” for quantum resistance and improved account abstraction.
  • A universal encrypted mempool proposal aims to combat front-running without relying on trusted parties.

Ethereum developers are already debating major features for the “Hegota” upgrade, even as they finalize the next “Glamsterdam” hard fork. This forward planning highlights the blockchain’s continuous evolution, with headliner features designed to deliver tangible user benefits.

Consequently, a growing consensus points to fork-choice inclusion lists (FOCIL) as a key Hegota headliner. This feature would eliminate block builders’ ability to censor transactions by forcing the inclusion of every valid transaction.

Meanwhile, developers have begun pitching complementary features for the upgrade. Last Thursday, Ethereum developers heard pitches for several proposals.

Jannik Luhn proposed a universal enshrined encrypted mempool, which would allow encrypted transactions to prevent front-running attacks. “We think this fits very well into a theme of improving credibility, neutrality, and censorship resistance of Ethereum,” Luhn said.

Felix Lange of the Ethereum Foundation advocated for frame transactions to prepare for a post-quantum world. This new transaction type would also offer a more robust version of account abstraction.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin endorsed Lange’s proposal. “From a use cases perspective, this does basically satisfy everything that, at least I’ve been pushing for — the entire list of goals of account abstraction,” Buterin said.

Finally, he stressed that quantum resistance was the proposal’s most critical aspect. Buterin stated it was the reason “why account abstraction of some form is ultimately indispensable.”
