- Ethereum Foundation released a new roadmap to add full privacy features to its main blockchain network.
- The “Privacy & Scaling Explorations” effort is now called “Privacy Stewards of Ethereum” (PSE).
- PSE will focus on privacy solutions for network, application, and wallet layers, including private transfers, voting, and decentralized finance (DeFi) features.
- Plans include using zero-knowledge proofs for private identity and protecting personal data in network communications.
- The initiative comes as U.S. officials consider requiring government identity checks for DeFi, raising privacy concerns in the crypto industry.
The Ethereum Foundation has unveiled a new plan to introduce end-to-end privacy features across the Ethereum blockchain. The announcement, made on Friday, also shares that the “Privacy & Scaling Explorations” group will now be known as the “Privacy Stewards of Ethereum,” or PSE. The group aims to strengthen privacy solutions at multiple levels in the coming six months.
PSE stated its team will focus on adding privacy through protocol, infrastructure, network, application, and wallet layers. Specific goals include enabling private transactions through the PlasmaFold layer-2 solution, adding confidential voting systems, and increasing privacy for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications.
The roadmap encourages exploring new approaches for securing personal data sent through remote procedure call (RPC) services—a common way for wallets and apps to connect with the blockchain. According to the PSE announcement, the initiative will also work to create private identity features using zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, a method that verifies information without sharing sensitive data.
“Ethereum deserves to become core infrastructure for global digital commerce, identity, collaboration, and the internet of value. But this potential is impossible without private data, transactions, and identity. We take responsibility within the Ethereum Foundation for ensuring privacy goals at the application layer are reached,” the PSE stated. The group also committed to working with protocol teams for any changes required to build censorship-resistant, privacy-focused systems in the Base Network.
Privacy has been a significant concern for the cryptocurrency community. With mainstream adoption and growing government interest, many in the industry worry about new methods of financial surveillance. The announcement links to the original roadmap discussion at Ethereum Magicians.
Meanwhile, U.S. officials are debating new rules that could require identity checks on decentralized finance platforms. The U.S. Department of the Treasury, led by Secretary Scott Bessent, is studying proposals that could add these checks directly into blockchain-based smart contracts—drawing criticism from the crypto sector.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has called privacy a basic human right. In recent comments, Buterin said that as state and corporate power grows, privacy for users is more important than ever. For further details, see the full roadmap and discussion on Ethereum Magicians.
