- The Ethereum Foundation has started a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) team to meet ecosystem demand.
- The team will focus on product development and helping traditional AI developers work with Ethereum.
- Initial plans center around supporting projects like micropayments, onchain identity, and AI agent verification.
- The group’s short-term roadmap includes ERC-8004, a proposal for trustless AI agent interaction.
- The Ethereum Foundation joins a growing trend of crypto projects integrating AI applications.
The Ethereum Foundation has created a new artificial intelligence (AI) team in response to requests from projects within its ecosystem. The move was not part of its original plan but was driven by demand for AI-focused development on the Ethereum platform.
Davide Crapis, the newly appointed lead for the team, said the initiative supports both the protocol and ecosystem divisions of Ethereum Foundation. He explained the dual focus aims to enhance products and make it easier for AI developers to work with Ethereum. The team will also provide support in areas such as micropayments, stablecoin integrations, and onchain identity and verification.
“If we can show these traditional AI developers that ‘hey, there is value here, there is decentralization, it could solve some problems around alignment, verification of AI, governance of AI,’ that would be a successful path for us,” Crapis told Cointelegraph. He also mentioned plans to release a detailed roadmap with set milestones later this year.
Currently, the foundation’s short-term agenda centers on ERC-8004, a proposed standard for discovering, selecting, and interacting with AI agents in a trustless manner. This proposal was co-authored by Crapis, MetaMask AI lead Marco De Rossi, and OpenAI’s Jordan Ellis. Crapis said the proposal received strong early interest and could have a significant impact.
Several AI-powered products and services, such as automated crypto payments and blockchain-based identity tools, are already emerging in the Ethereum network. The new team consists of Crapis, an AI product manager, and a staff member who will coordinate research and development with protocol teams.
Other blockchain organizations have also started exploring AI, such as Planck’s launch of a layer-0 blockchain for AI and Kite AI’s introduction of AI-focused solutions on Avalanche. Crypto-enabled AI agents began to appear on blockchain networks in 2023, enabling financial transactions and other automated tasks.
Crapis said he does not believe the Ethereum Foundation is late to adopt AI. “The timing feels right because people have been experimenting with AI coordination on these protocols for about two years now,” he stated.
The foundation’s new direction comes from internal recognition of AI’s potential role in Ethereum’s development, aiming for long-term adaptability and growth.
