  • An Instagram handle using Elon Musk’s name is being auctioned in a Telegram group for thousands of dollars.
  • The current top bid for the account is $6,000.
  • There are concerns the handle could be used to promote fraudulent cryptocurrencies or phishing scams.
  • The handle has changed names eight times and now displays “Tekk” in its profile bio.
  • Elon Musk has not had an Instagram account since 2018.

A high-profile Instagram account using the name of Elon Musk is up for sale in a Telegram username trading group. Bidders are offering thousands of dollars for control of the handle, raising concerns about its potential misuse to advertise questionable cryptocurrencies or deceptive links.

Currently, the top bid for the account is $6,000. The sale is taking place in the “Tekk” username selling group on Telegram, with the account switching its displayed name to “Tekk” and changing usernames eight times.

X user @henn100x first flagged the auction and warned, “don’t fall for any larp coins the next owner of the account might endorse.” Scammers often use well-known social media handles to promote suspicious cryptocurrencies or insert phishing links, targeting followers who believe the accounts are genuine.

Similar handles, including @transformers, @terrorists, and @cocaines, are also being sold in these groups. Incidents of high-profile account takeovers are common. According to the article, millions of dollars in cryptocurrency were stolen in the past year after Hackers took control of X and Instagram accounts belonging to brands and celebrities like McDonald’s, Usher, and Wiz Khalifa.

This is not the first time scammers have targeted Elon Musk’s online presence for crypto-related schemes. The article notes that Musk has not maintained an Instagram account since 2018, after deleting it and stating on X, “Instagram is so thirsty, yet gives you Death by Water.”
