- The “dead internet” conspiracy theory from five years ago, which posits most online content is AI-generated, is gaining plausibility.
- CHEQ reported up to 75.85% of video views on X came from bots and AI agents in 2024.
- Industry figures are rebranding this AI-dominated future as “Web 4.0,” where AI agents manage most online interactions and transactions.
The concept that Artificial Intelligence has secretly taken over most online interactions, known as the dead internet theory, is now being actively promoted as the next evolutionary phase by crypto and tech entrepreneurs. Consequently, what was once seen as a dystopian scenario is being reframed as a lucrative opportunity under the name “Web 4.0.”
Data from CHEQ in 2024 showed that bot networks accounted for up to three-quarters of video views on social media platform X at times. While other platforms reported lower figures, the numbers signal a significant shift toward automated online activity.
This proposed new era follows previous web iterations focused on structure, consumerism, and decentralization. Web 4.0, however, envisions a near-total removal of human involvement from creation to commerce online.
Prominent figures in the crypto space, such as entrepreneur Justin Sun, are publicly endorsing this AI-driven vision. The appeal for brokers and token creators lies in fully automated trading managed by AI agents. It remains unclear if the wider public will embrace this future or if its adoption is already inevitable.
