Comedian William Banks from Brooklyn executed one of crypto’s strangest promotional stunts, fabricating a prison sentence and escape to launch memecoins in early 2025. His bizarre tale involved staged jail content and two token launches that he rug-pulled for charity. He was previously charged with larceny for stealing Israeli yard signs in late 2023.
However, his subsequent eight-month prison claim was entirely fictional. Public records revealed a casting call for a Jail Saga Reality Show connected to a company he co-owned. When pressed by Cryptopolitan, Banks admitted, “I recreated it of course, but it’s real. It happened.”
Consequently, the viral escape video attracted crypto promoters like “Jester,” whom Banks denied working with directly. He nevertheless launched tokens named White Moses (MOSES) and William Banks (BANKS) on the Solana platform Pump Fun. Banks then executed rapid sell-offs, crashing each token’s value by over 95%.
His total profits from the sales reached roughly $50,000. Subsequently, he shared payment receipts showing donations of that amount to Palestinian aid groups. “Thank you to the crypto community for buying my pretend memecoin,” Banks stated, proclaiming, “William Banks is Robin Hood.”
