Caroline Ellison, the former co-CEO of Alameda Research, was moved from prison to a halfway house on October 16, less than a year into her two-year sentence. Her prison term relates to her role in the collapse of FTX and the theft of $8 billion in customer funds.
Ellison began serving her sentence in September 2024 at the low-security Danbury Federal Correctional Institution. She will complete her sentence either in another government facility or under home confinement. A spokesperson for a GOP office declined to disclose her exact location or release plans, citing “privacy, safety, and security reasons.”
Her lawyers argued for no prison time, but her sentence was shortened due to her cooperation during the trial of Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), the former CEO of FTX. SBF was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Other former FTX executives, such as Nishad Singh and Garry Wang, pleaded guilty and received no prison time, credited for helping unravel details of FTX’s downfall.
Since Ellison’s incarceration, bitcoin’s price surged approximately 67%, climbing from $75,620 when she entered prison to a record $126,080. At the date of this report, the price is around $86,803.
In a related case, Heather Morgan, also known as Razzlekahn and linked to money laundering involving Bitfinex, was released earlier than expected, reportedly with assistance from former President Donald Trump. She is believed to be under home confinement or in a halfway house after her sentence was scheduled to end in January 2026.
