Details surrounding the crash on the winding forest road overlooking Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley have not been released. A witness recorded video of the incident and provided it to local authorities. Zampella was 55 years old at the time of his death.

Zampella was the head and co-founder of Respawn Entertainment, a game development company established in 2010 with Jason West. The company is responsible for successful games including Titanfall, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and the Star Wars Jedi series. Before founding Respawn, Zampella was a lead developer at Infinity Ward, known for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

The Call of Duty franchise has generated over $30 billion in revenue as of mid-2025, making it one of the highest-grossing video game series. Additionally, Battlefield 6, launched by Electronic Arts (EA) in 2025, sold over 20 million copies and earned approximately $1.4 billion.

EA acquired Respawn Entertainment in 2017, and Zampella served as its CEO since then. Following the news of his death, shares of EA and Activision Blizzard, parent company of Infinity Ward, both dropped marginally in the stock market on Monday.
