- This incident follows a rising trend of kidnappers demanding cryptocurrency ransoms, known as “wrench attacks,” targeting crypto holders globally.
The investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, 84-year-old mother of Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, has intensified with the emergence of an alleged Bitcoin ransom note. Guthrie was last seen at her Arizona home on January 31, and authorities now treat the case as a possible kidnapping after discovering “very concerning” evidence.
According to reports, the note was emailed to media outlet TMZ and demands a large Bitcoin payment for her release. TMZ founder Harvey Levin confirmed the outlet passed the information to law enforcement, stating, “We don’t know whether this is legit or not.” However, an executive producer said the note contained a verified Bitcoin address and specific details about the scene.
Consequently, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office has acknowledged the reports, writing on social media that all leads are taken seriously. They added that detectives are coordinating with the FBI but declined further comment on its authenticity.
Meanwhile, this case mirrors a disturbing pattern of cryptocurrency-related kidnappings. For instance, WonderFi CEO Dean Skurka was abducted in 2024 after a similar $720,000 ransom demand. Likewise, Ledger co-founder David Balland faced a crypto ransom kidnapping in France just two months later.
