- Apple has delayed the rollout of its enhanced AI-powered Siri with Apple Intelligence to “the coming year.”
- The tech giant is continuing other AI initiatives including ChatGPT integration and previously announced a $500 billion investment in AI research.
- This setback raises questions about Apple’s competitive positioning in the accelerating AI race despite already implementing some AI features across its products.
Apple has postponed the release of its enhanced AI-powered Siri assistant, the company confirmed on Friday. The anticipated upgrade featuring improved personalization through Apple Intelligence will now arrive later than expected, with the tech giant only committing to a launch "in the coming year" – a significant delay for a company facing mounting pressure in the Artificial Intelligence arena.
In an official statement provided to Daring Fireball‘s John Gruber, an Apple spokesperson acknowledged that while several Siri improvements have been implemented—including OpenAI‘s ChatGPT integration and enhanced conversational capabilities—the more advanced personalization features require additional development time.
"We’ve also been working on a more personalized Siri, giving it more awareness of your personal context, as well as the ability to take action for you within and across your apps," the spokesperson explained. "It’s going to take us longer than we thought to deliver on these features and we anticipate rolling them out in the coming year."
The company has not provided specific reasons for the delay. While Reuters reported that the update could be pushed back to 2026, industry analyst Gruber suggests the fully revamped Siri might arrive with iOS 19 and macOS 16, expected in fall 2025. Notably, recent developer beta updates have lacked the promised Apple Intelligence features.
This setback occurs amid Apple’s intensified focus on artificial intelligence throughout 2024. The company previously announced plans to invest $500 billion in AI research in February and formed a strategic partnership with semiconductor developer Broadcom to launch its first AI server chip by 2026.
Despite the delay, Apple has already rolled out multiple AI features across its ecosystem. Users currently have access to customizable AI-generated emojis, an image generator within Messages, and AI-enhanced search capabilities for Apple TV and Apple Music services. These implementations represent the company’s initial steps into integrating generative AI across its product lineup.
The postponement has triggered negative reactions from some users on social media platforms, highlighting the competitive pressure Apple faces in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. As tech rivals accelerate their AI offerings, the delay raises questions about Apple’s ability to keep pace in what has become a high-stakes technology arms race.
