Apple Adds End-to-End Encryption to iMessage RCS

Apple enhances iPhone security with encrypted RCS and stolen device protection by default.

  • Apple is testing end-to-end encryption for RCS messages in its latest iOS 26.4 developer beta.
  • The new Memory Integrity Enforcement feature offers enhanced memory safety to counter sophisticated spyware attacks.
  • Stolen Device Protection is expected to be enabled by default for all iPhones in the upcoming update.

On Monday, Apple announced a pivotal security upgrade for cryptocurrency users by releasing a developer beta that adds end-to-end encryption to RCS messages. This feature, currently in testing within iOS and iPadOS 26.4, aims to shield sensitive financial communications from prying eyes while data is in transit.

However, the encryption is initially limited to conversations between Apple devices and will not extend to other platforms like Android. The company noted in its release notes that “conversations labeled as encrypted are encrypted end-to-end, so messages can’t be read while they’re sent between devices.”

Consequently, this move aligns with the broader GSM Association’s push for secure messaging protocols built for the modern era. The encryption leverages the Messaging Layer Security protocol as part of the RCS Universal Profile 3.0 standard.

Meanwhile, the same beta introduces a crucial security hardening feature for apps. These applications can now opt into the full safeguards of Memory Integrity Enforcement for superior protection against memory corruption attacks.

This enhancement builds upon the MIE framework Apple unveiled last September to defend against mercenary spyware. The system provides always-on protection across critical attack surfaces without any performance overhead.

Additionally, a report indicates iOS 26.4 will enable Stolen Device Protection by default. This feature requires biometric authentication for sensitive actions when a phone is away from trusted locations.

It also imposes a mandatory one-hour security delay before users can change their Apple Account password. This extra layer is designed to give victims time to report a stolen device and protect their digital assets.
