- Ethereum developer Joe Schiarizzi is running for Congress as a Democrat in Virginia, positioning himself as an anti-Trump, pro-public-good crypto politician.
- He criticizes the current pro-crypto political alignment, arguing many lawmakers are opportunistic and lack genuine understanding of the technology’s potential.
- His platform focuses on using crypto for societal benefits like funding renewable energy and healthcare, while advocating for simpler taxes and using stablecoin reserves for public infrastructure.
- The race is crowded, but Schiarizzi is the only candidate currently accepting campaign donations in a wide array of cryptocurrencies.
Joe Schiarizzi, a 30-year-old Ethereum developer, launched a campaign Thursday to run as a Democratic House candidate in Virginia’s suburban 7th congressional district. He represents a new breed of crypto candidate, one with direct technical experience and a sharp critique of the industry’s current political associations. Schiarizzi argues crypto should return to its roots as a tool for public good, not political profiteering.
He specifically criticized the Trump administration’s association with crypto ventures, calling it “the most corrupt administration in American history.” Consequently, he believes the technology should be leveraged for use cases like funding solar farms or enabling private medical payments. However, he also takes issue with the new wave of pro-crypto lawmakers in Congress.
Schiarizzi contends these politicians are primarily seeking support from the colossal crypto super PACs that have spent heavily on recent U.S. elections. “They just want a check and they don’t understand the actual good that these technologies can do,” he said. His proposed policies include simpler crypto taxes and expanding stablecoin reserves to include municipal bonds.
If elected, he would push for legal exemptions for common crypto tools and use stablecoin reserves to fund public projects. Meanwhile, his path to Washington is challenged by several established Democratic candidates, including a state senator and the wife of a former governor. Nevertheless, Schiarizzi’s campaign stands out by accepting donations in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and even the Trump meme coin.
