Former New York governor Andrew Cuomo is incorporating cryptocurrency, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and biotechnology into his campaign to return as mayor of New York City. He aims to position the city as a global innovation hub by uniting efforts across these industries and updating how the city adopts new technology.
Cuomo’s plan includes creating a chief innovation officer position to attract investments and increase jobs in emerging sectors. Additionally, an Innovation Council with committees dedicated to crypto, AI, and biotech would provide advice on adopting new technologies, workforce training, and reducing regulatory obstacles.
Cuomo has prior experience in the cryptocurrency field, having provided counsel during a federal investigation involving crypto exchange OKX. The exchange eventually pled guilty to multiple violations and agreed to pay over $500 million in fines and penalties.
If Cuomo succeeds in his bid and implements these initiatives, New York City could shift from a strict enforcement approach toward one that fosters industry talent and financial innovation. This could also enhance the connection between traditional finance (TradFi) and crypto markets, leveraging Wall Street’s massive capital base.
The city hosts the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, which together hold market capitalizations exceeding $30 trillion, dwarfing other global exchanges like the Shanghai Stock Exchange, valued near $8 trillion. Meanwhile, the current mayor Eric Adams has already taken steps by launching America’s first municipal Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain Technology. This office aims to promote responsible use of digital assets, expand economic opportunities, attract top talent, and sustain New York’s position as a leading financial and technological center.
Cuomo is competing against Democrat Zohran Mamdani and Republican Curtis Sliwa to replace Adams, with voting set for November 4. Mamdani, considered the frontrunner, holds political positions viewed as more left-leaning than the Democratic Party average and has not spoken much about crypto. Some industry figures have expressed concern over Mamdani’s rise, indicating challenges ahead for New York’s tech ecosystem.
