- BGD Labs, a primary developer for the Aave protocol, announced it will end its four-year role with the project’s DAO on April 1.
- The departure stems from an “asymmetric organizational scenario” and concerns that the DAO is deprioritizing version 3 to promote version 4.
- The team proposed a $200,000, two-month security retainer to aid the transition and will provide maintenance guidelines for its work.
- Community reactions express concern over losing a major contributor, with some users pointing to broader structural issues within the DAO.
In a significant shakeup for decentralized finance, BGD Labs, a core technical contributor to the Aave protocol, announced it will sever ties with the project’s DAO on April 1 after four years of development work. The decision was revealed in a Friday forum post on Aave, citing fundamental disagreements over the project’s direction.
BGD criticized an “asymmetric organizational scenario” it claims the DAO has badly executed, disregarding contributor expertise. Consequently, the firm stated that Aave had taken an adversarial stance toward its V3 protocol to favor features in the upcoming V4.
“We are not really interested in being in that position, as we think it is a waste of our potential,” BGD wrote. The contributor will continue its work on V3, security, and chain expansions until the official exit date, ensuring no immediate disruption.
However, BGD noted there is no direct off-boarding plan for it to remain involved with the Aave protocol long-term. It consequently proposed a two-month, $200,000 security retainer for community consideration to help Aave find a replacement.
Reactions from many users were largely positive toward BGD, with concerns about losing a major contributor. “If independent contributors feel sidelined by DAO-level centralization, maybe the answer is just structural clarity inside the DAO,” said one user in a forum response.
Some community members blamed Aave founder Stani Kulechov for the departure. Meanwhile, Kulechov himself responded to the post, expressing respect for the decision. “I respect BGD’s decision, though I am sad to see them go,” the founder stated.
