Aave Labs Sparks DAO Clash Over Holiday Vote on Brand Assets

Aave Labs’ Controversial Proposal to Transfer Brand Assets to Aave DAO Sparks Community Backlash and Abstention Calls

  • Aave Labs has placed a proposal to transfer brand assets to the Aave DAO for a vote, stirring controversy.
  • The proposal’s author was not consulted before the vote was initiated, causing criticism.
  • The vote started during the holiday period, raising concerns over timing and adequate community debate.
  • The disagreement reflects growing tensions between Aave Labs and the DAO over control and revenue from branded assets.
  • Community members have reacted strongly, with some advocating for abstention in the vote as a protest measure.

Aave Labs advanced a proposal on Sunday, requesting the transfer of brand assets—like the naming rights, social media accounts, and the aave.com domain—to the Aave DAO, the organization that governs the protocol. This vote is scheduled to conclude on Christmas Day.

The move follows recent criticism over Aave Labs retaining revenue from the main access website to the Aave protocol, which previously flowed to the DAO. The revenue retention, defended by Labs as a means to cover website operational costs, has been viewed by some as an improper profit from DAO-funded brand assets.

The proposal was originally authored by software engineer Ernesto Boado, who intended it to clarify ownership and control of Aave-branded intellectual property. Boado, who co-founded Bored Ghosts Developing—a company engaged by the DAO for development and security—has condemned the progression to the vote, calling it “disgraceful” and urging members to abstain, signaling discontent.

Aave’s founder and Aave Labs CEO, Stani Kulechov, has indicated that the matter has been extensively discussed, encouraging token holders to participate in the vote. However, the timing during the Christmas week has drawn criticism from prominent community delegates, including Marc Zeller of Aave Chan Initiative, who labeled the vote scheduling a “hostile takeover attempt” by Aave Labs and announced an abstain vote.

The heated dialogue marks an unusual rift between Aave Labs and the DAO. The proposal has become the fourth most commented-on in the DAO’s history, highlighting significant community engagement.

Meanwhile, some members feel the controversy has been overstated. One participant noted in forum discussion that the issue has attracted broad media attention and said they sold some AAVE tokens amid the dispute. AAVE’s price has declined approximately 20% in the past week, contrasting with relatively stable prices for Bitcoin and Ethereum.
