The European Union signed a landmark trade deal with India on Tuesday, a move perceived as a snub to US foreign policy, according to reports. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen labeled the agreement the “mother of all trade deals” following its announcement. This pact lowers tariffs and grants freer market access, including reduced Indian duties on EU vehicles.
Consequently, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reacted harshly by calling the deal a sign of European double standards. He expressed being “very disappointed” and criticized Europe for doing little to protect Ukraine while using US funds. Bessent highlighted the US sacrifice of imposing 25% tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil.
Meanwhile, India’s Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated the EU deal has nothing to do with the US relationship. He stressed the bilateral structure with America remains “very strong” and both nations stay committed to a deal. Puri advised all parties to “chill a bit” regarding the timing of future US-India trade talks.
