Scotland Hospital Opens Rehab Center for Crypto Addicts
Are you a cryptocurrency addict? If so, there’s a hospital in Scotland that can help you … it’s the world’s first center focused on tackling crypto trading addiction.
We all have our guilty pleasures. Whether its chocolate, alcohol, or something completely off the wall, we all have unique items or actions we like to over-indulge in from time to time, but for some people, that appears to be cryptocurrency. A hospital in Scotland thinks some individuals may be taking their obsessions a little too far, and staff members are trying to lend a helping hand.
They May Take Our Lives, but They’ll Never Take … Our Crypto!!!
Castle Craig Hospital – Scotland’s largest addiction treatment facility – now has a center specifically dedicated to “cryptocurrency addicts.” Staff members say these individuals show all the same signs and behaviors as people addicted to gambling, only this time, they’re dealing with a 24-7 urge to trade crypto, despite suffering consistent losses.
“The high risk, fluctuating cryptocurrency market appeals to the problem gambler,” says Chris Burn, a gambling therapist at the hospital. “It provides excitement and an escape from reality. Bitcoin, for example, has been heavily traded, and huge gains and losses were made. It’s a classic bubble situation.”
The patients in the program experience many of the same treatments as gambling addicts, like group therapy, in which each person shares his or her unique story of how they got to where they are.
An Inside Angle
Former gambling and cocaine addict Tony Marini now works as a therapist with the hospital, and will lead some of the remedy programs. He’s looking to help the patients find life focus, which he says is key to overcoming any addition.
“Having been through it myself, my experience of addiction gives me insight and empathy towards others who have the same problem,” he explained.
Is Crypto Addiction Even Real?
Many people, however, are not convinced cryptocurrency addiction is real. Niko da Costa Gomez, for instance, is a frequent cryptocurrency trader that has been making profits on his investments. He doesn’t think a rehabilitation program is necessary, nor does he believe anyone can become addicted unless they’re very rich.
CEO of blockchain startup Velix.ID Manav Singhal agrees, and says regular losses are just part of the investment game.
“Profits and losses are just a part of the trading, and it is no different than trading any other kinds of securities,” he states. “Gambling addicts are just that – gambling addicts. They can choose any addiction they want, and it can be cryptocurrencies, but that doesn’t mean most traders are addicts. There’s many reasons that make you trade cryptocurrencies frequently, given how fast things are changing in the industry.”
